Dominion Arboretum

Established in 1889, the Dominion Arboretum is th oldest arboretum in Canada, with several trees dating all the way back to its inception. Among these 64-acres of land, you’ll find over 1000 species and varieties of trees from around the globe. The arboretum was originally created as a way to evaluate the winter hardiness of woody plants. There is a unique microclimate in the northeast corner where you can find magnolias, rhododendrons and wisteria. The northeast and southeast lookouts provide panoramic views of the Rideau Canal, Carleton University, Dow’s lake and the city.

Visitor parking next to Building 72 or next to lookouts.

Ornamental Gardens

The Ornamental Gardens span across eight acres of land and are home to a collection of international plant species of both historic and new varieties. Similar to the arboretum, the gardens were originally used to test the hardiness of roses, weigela and peonies in the Canadian climate. Stroll through the gardens to see beautiful displays of annuals, perennials, lilacs, roses and hedges. Among the most popular are the Heritage Rose and Explorer Rose garden.

Visitor parking in small lot of the NCC Driveway or in the Agriculture and Food Museum lot.
